Steenberg Vineyards

Steenberg – an historical vineyard, stylish tasting rooms and restaurants with a boutique hotel and spa, and golf course.

Established as the one of the first farms in South Africa, Steenberg has made its mark as one of the finest wine producers in South Africa. My favourite twist – The first owner, in 1682, was a woman, Catharina Ustings Ras.

A little history of Steenberg Vineyards

Catharina Ustings Ras leased the farm from 1682 until the title deeds were bestowed on her in 1688. An immigrant widow of 22 from Lübeck  Germany, this was an incredibly daring brave woman. Originally named Swaaneweide, probably after her roots in Germany, Catharina Ras sold the farm to Frederick Russouw in 1695, who planted the first vines. After his death, his widow Christina Diemer ran the farm; yet another woman at the helm of this frontier farm.

Jacques Fouche

Jacques has been a keen travel junkie, for as long as he can remember. Having spent his childhood in Namibia, Limpopo province in South Africa (near the Kruger National Park ) and KZN in South Africa and later Cape Town, always been surrounded by nature and beautiful scenery. Qualifying as a safari guide in 1996, Jacques guided over virtually all possible natural eco systems and travelled over hundreds of thousands of kilometers, through all the southern African countries. Later he spent 8 years living and working in Austria, mixing cultural, city and natural scenic travels all across Europe.
